Abstract:
What is the best theory for explaining the nature of our actions in virtual reality? Drawing on earlier work from McDonnell & Wildman (2017, 2020), I here develop and defend a Waltonian fictionalist account of virtual actions. This account is, I argue, superior to virtual realist accounts of virtual actions, as well as the recent fictionalist theory proposed by Nader (2022), according to which participants in virtual reality are best understood as authors of the relevant VR fiction. The upshot is that virtual Waltonian fictionalism, properly understood, provides the most compelling explanation of the nature of virtual actions.
